Thunder Bay Rapidly Implements Elixir MES Following Acquisition

Learn how MAJIQ helped Thunder Bay Mill transition in under a year.

Case Studies

The Challenge

Following an acquisition by Atlas Holdings, Thunder Bay Mill was established as an independent pulp and paper operation—now part of Thunder Bay Pulp & Paper. This set in motion a critical timeline to replace their large legacy ERP in under a year, as required by a Transition Service Agreement (TSA).

Not renewing existing ERP due to higher cost
Only twelve months to transition systems
Needed an end-to-end solution for an integrated view of operations

The Solution

With the clock ticking, Thunder Bay needed to transition essential business functions to the new solution without disrupting operations. Meeting this challenge with their implementation team required careful planning and a clear understanding of the operational needs of a pulp and paper mill. Thankfully, Atlas had a solution in mind. Having used MAJIQ’s MES for many of their mills, it made sense to bring Elixir to Thunder Bay as well. Throughout the project, MAJIQ used tools and accelerators to streamline implementation. Since Elixir is a configurable solution rather than custom-built, minimal to no development was required, leading to a faster launch with best practices ready right out of the box. Additionally, when Thunder Bay needed in-person guidance to train staff and fast-track the transition process, MAJIQ went the extra mile. The onsite help proved invaluable, drawing on the expertise of MAJIQ's Business Analysts and Technical specialists, who bring an average of 20+ years of experience in pulp, paper, and Elixir implementations.

The Result

The project ultimately met its ambitious deadline – a 9-month timeframe from project kick-off to full go live – and transitioned Thunder Bay from their legacy ERP to Elixir on schedule and without production downtime. Thunder Bay gained complete control over its operations, allowing for faster decision-making and more seamless collaboration across the business.

Streamlined communication within a single platform

Improved visibility across the entire manufacturing process
Ongoing support from MAJIQ for ongoing improvement

Customers Review

“Elixir is powerful yet simpler to use than our previous system. We can complete tasks much faster—like shipping a load, assigning roles, and fixing mistakes. For instance, with our previous ERP, unshipping a load required a long process. Now, it only takes a few minutes. Elixir handles everything automatically, including documents and invoices. We also have more control—entering entities, changing routes, and managing everything ourselves without waiting. It’s made everything much smoother at the mill.”
